Nutrition
A holistic approach to nutrition is similar to a naturopathic approach. Treatment is based on these core ideas:
- The healing power of nature involves encouraging the body to heal itself and nutrition can help facilitate this natural process.
- Identify and treat the cause rather than only fix the symptoms. The underlying cause must be identified and removed to achieve complete healing. Causes may not only be physical but also mental, emotional and spiritual. Part of the treatment will be to alleviate the symptoms but primarily the treatment is aimed at the cause.
- First, do no harm by not blocking the healing process by suppressing symptoms that are a natural part of the healing process.
- Treat the whole person including physical, spiritual and emotional. Most disease states are a combination of these different aspects and all these are important considerations in the treatment program.
- The nutritionist as teacher to educate people in diet and lifestyle. Also to encourage people to take responsibility for their own health.
- Prevention of disease is the main aim of a nutritionist. This includes eating a diet according to your needs to build up the systems of your body to cope with the today’s society.
Difference between Dietician and Nutritionist
The difference between a nutritionist and a dietician is not very clear. Dieticians tend to work in an allopathic environment such as hospitals whereas nutritionists work in either a holistic or allopathic area such as private clinical practice. Both can advise on health and diet. Nutritionists focus on finding the cause of the disease to achieve complete healing. Nutritionists are more likely to prescribe supplements to overcome acute deficiencies with long-term improvement in diet and lifestyle.
Working with your doctor
Nutrition is often a part of an overall treatment program guided by your doctor or specialist. Paula can work with your doctor ensuring everyone is working with the same treatment program.
What you can do for yourself
There is quite lot a person can do for themselves to improve their diet.
Australian Government Ministry of Health provides information on the recommended daily intake and specific nutrient requirements.
Food Standards Australia/New Zealand contains good information of food allergies. It is a great starting site for those who want to understand what they are really eating.
For those wanting weight loss or those with diabetes the glycemic index of foods is important. To see which foods are better visit The Home of Glycemic Index.
The Heart Foundation website provides lots of good tips on healthy living and recipes. To create your own menu and understand what nutrients are in each food visit Nutrition Data.
Referral Network
Sometimes referrals to another modality are necessary because they compliment the nutrition or would benefit the client in other ways. I have spent considerable time looking for other local practitioners who I think are worthy of recommendation.
